Wade Miller Watch

MILLER LOOKS SHARP IN PAWSOX DEBUT

April 28, 2005
Boston righthander Wade Miller was impressive on Thursday night, throwing five shutout innings, scattering just five hits in his rehab start at McCoy Stadium. Although Miller didn't figure in the decision, the PawSox prevailed 1-0. Tim Kester earned the win and Jack Cressend and Juan Perez closed it out. Kelly Shoppach blasted his seventh home run for all the offense the Sox would need. Shoppachs' heroics were not confined strictly to hitting. He gunned down would-be base stealer Jim Rushford for the final out of the game. After the game, Miller said he would "plead his case" to Red Sox G.M. Theo Epstein, hoping he could forgo another rehab start and return directly to the Red Sox. The PawSox and Scranton meet again Friday night at 6:05. Chris Narveson matches up with Robinson Tejeda. - Pawsox Homepage

Mild Bone Bruise on the famous "Bloody Ankle"

"When you're playing a team with a manager who somehow forgot how the game is played, there's problems. This should have been over a little bit ago. Lou's trying to make his team be a bunch of tough guys, and the telling sign is when the players on that team are saying, `This is why we lose a hundred games a year, because this idiot makes us do stuff like this.' They were saying this on the field."- Curt Schilling on Tampa Bay Manager Lou Pinella

Robert Earl Wilson 1934-2005

By Don Hyslop
I will always remember Earl Wilson. He pitched the first big league I ever saw in person. A young teenager who was taken to Fenway in 1962 because we were in Boston and I bugged my parents to take me. Earl Wilson died this past weekend at the age of 70 of a massive heart attack.
Earl Wilson was the first black player signed by the Boston Red Sox. He might have been the first to play for the Sox had his career not been delayed by having to spend two years in the military in 1956-57. We all know that that distinction ended up going to Pumpsie Green. Earl came up to the Sox in 1959 but did not stick being sent back to the minors under Johnny Pesky the next season. He came up for good in 1962, the year I saw him. Earlier in that same year, he had pitched a no hitter against the same Los Angeles Angels that I saw him pitch against.
Earl was also one of the best hitting pitchers I have ever had the pleasure of following. Beginning as a catcher was probably part of that reason. In his career Earl had 35 home runs and twice hit 7 in a season.
When Earl came up to the Red Sox, they were not a very good team. This was well before the magic of 67. I remember that game I went to in 62, my family walked up to the ticket booth and bought five tickets in the grandstand behind first an hour before the game. During the period of his tenure as a Red Sox he had a record of 56 wins and 58 losses. When he was traded to Detroit during the 66 season things changed for Earl Wilson. He went 13-6 the rest of that season and in 1967, he had a record of 22-11 and challenged Jim Lonborg for the Cy Young Award. Earl earned a spot on the Sporting News' All Star teams in both 1966-1967.The very next year 1968, he unlike his old Red Sox teammates also got a World Series ring when the Tigers beat the Cards.
Here is a quote from one of Earl's old Red Sox teammates, Frank Malzone, that appeared in the Globe,
"We had some good clubs, but it was always the Yankees in those days; they won eight of the 10 years I was in Boston, if memory serves me right. Lean years, yes, but great people -- and Earl was a great guy." The Sox of the early 1960s, the post-Ted Williams Red Sox, were a motley lot, often playing in front of sparse crowds in the dowdy ballyard. Wilson, a 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound righthander, was an old-fashioned fastball pitcher who powered his way through innings, stringing together eight seasons of 200-plus innings."
Earl you will be missed. You were a Red Sox player when I first started cheering for this team that was not loved by so many at that time and for that I will always remember you.

Earl's stats:

If the man upstairs is listening would you please take it easy on calling up Red Sox players to your league as we have lost too many down here lately.

Down on the Farm

by Don Hyslop (Scotian1 on the message board)

It is early but I thought I would just give an overview of how the Sox farm teams and some of the players are doing.
First of all, Pawtucket is struggling. They hold down last place in their division of the International League with a 3 win, 7 loss record. Some of the notables include Abe Alvarez who has a 1-0 record having thrown 10 innings with a 4.50 ERA. D. Tomori is 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA in 3 IP. At the plate Pawtucket has been led by Ambers with a .292 BA. Kelly Shoppach is hitting .276 with 3 homers, while Youkilis is now 1 for 8 in his stay with the PAWSOX.
Meanwhile the Portland Sea Dogs are tearing up the league so far in the Eastern League's Northern Division. Their 9-0 record leaves them the last unbeaten team in professional baseball. Pitching wise Papelbon is 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA in 11IP and has 9 K's. Gabbard is also 2-0 with an miniscule ERA of 0.64. The Sea Dog hitters are also doing well. Hanley Ramirez is hitting .351 with 4 triples, Jeremy West is batting .448 with a .515 OBP, Jared Sandberg is hitting .364 with 3 homers and a .758 SLG pct. Pedroia is at .345. The young outfielders, Murphy(.269) and Moss(.179) are struggling somewhat in this early going.
The Greenville Bombers are tied for second in the Southern Division of the Southern Atlantic League with a 6-3 record. The two most notable prospects Soto(.241) and Lara(.200) are still finding their way. Pitchers Rozier with a 0-0 in 5 IP and Dobies with a 1-0 record and a 2.70 ERA are worthy of note.
The Carolina League Wilmington Blue Rocks at present hold down second place in the Northern Division with a 5-4 record. notable 1B prospect I. Bladergroen is at present hitting .259 in 27 AB. Pitching prospect A. Sanchez had an excellent game yesterday. Here are the details for that one.
Sanchez (1-0) struck out a career-high 14 and notched his first win of 2005 as the Wilmington Blue Rocks defeated the Salem Avalanche 2-0 in front of 3,984 at Frawley Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win on Saturday afternoon moved Wilmington to a game over .500 for the first time this year.
Overall the farm system has got off to a pretty decent start and there can be no doubt the Portland team is the Sox farm team to watch to watch this year.

Sheffield v.s. "The House"

MLB Investigating  incident and will release a statement soon.

Curry College Head Coach, Chris House past incident:

MIT’s hopes did not die without some controversy, however, as Curry took a delay of game penalty when they had possession with about 3 and a half minutes left. The game’s officials allowed the clock to run even after the penalty had been called. Assistant coach Chris House ran on the field, and grabbed the linesman to alert him. Startled, he assessed a 15-yard penalty against MIT (thereby granting Curry a first down). As the linesman walked away, House called him a “fat boy” and another 15-yard penalty was assessed. -When head Coach at Curry College

Pictures of the incident at FHMUS.com

Fever Pitch- Ok, here is my take on Fever Pitch:

I am going to make this short & sweet:  Guy meets girl, guy & girl fall in love, guy & girl break up, guy & girl get back together and realize what they had lost.. blah..blah..blah.. The premise of the movie is that of a total chick flick no different then the any other so if you are a chick then go see it regardless of the Red Sox spin. With that said there was a lot of typical Farrelly Brother funny quirky parts to the movie that will make you laugh, some great Red Sox footage, and a nice make out scene at the end.  Jimmy Fallon is one the the most naturally funny comedians out there short of Will Farrell and a few others. His humor makes the non Red Sox parts tolerable.  If the basis wasn't that of an obsessed Red Sox fan I would say pass on this one but there is a lot in the movie you will be able to relate to and some feel good footage of 2004 so check it out when you have a chance but don't expect a blockbuster.

Girlfriend of Fan who took swipe at Sheffield says

"He was just going for the ball"

Chris House is the guys name and my advice is to just laugh it off and hope they don't take your season tickets away.  It didn't look like you were swinging at him as some are calling it, rather swiping towards the wall and maybe made some light contact at best with Sheffield.

Hats off to the security kid that was there in about a 1/2 second.  Someone sign this kid up for the 50 yard dash next Olympics!

"One Pitch From Glory"

Lou Gorman was the Boston Red Sox general manager from 1984-1993. The South Providence, Rhode Island native has had a long and distinguished career in baseball, having worked in the front offices of the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets before coming home to his beloved Sox. He's just written a book about his life with the Red Sox called "One Pitch From Glory", which will be released on April 1. Recently I had a chance to talk to Lou about Ted Williams, Jeff Bagwell, Fenway Park, the 2004 champions, and of course, the 1986 team he put together.

JBQ: Where were you on October 27, 2004, when the dream of every Red Sox fan finally came true?

LG: Well, I was invited to be at Busch Stadium in St. Louis to see all the World Series games live, but I decided to stay home in Boston to watch all the games with my wife. When the final out was made, I pulled out a bottle of Chardonnay and we drank a toast to the Red Sox and their championship.

JBQ: What thoughts were running through your mind as the last out was made and the Red Sox were officially World Champions?

LG: My first thoughts were of the Yawkeys, Tom and Jean. I knew that wherever they were, they were smiling and happy. I also thought of Dan Duquette, and how a lot of the 2004 championship club was put together by him. I also drank a toast to Theo Epstein, John Henry, Larry Lucchino and Tom Werner, to the absolutely brilliant job they all did in the short time they had been with the club.

JBQ: There also had to be some pain in seeing the Red Sox finally win the World Series.

LG: Oh yes, I definitely remembered the pain of the loss in the 1986 World Series. It was the only regret I had. I thought of a lot of those 1986 players that night, like Bruce Hurst, Jim Rice and Dwight Evans. I only wish we had brought that elusive title to our fans that year.

JBQ: What else do you think about when you remember the 1986 club?

LG: Coming so incredibly close and not winning it will always be what I think of first about that team. I think of things like if we had had Tom Seaver in the postseason he might have made the difference, but an August knee injury ended his season. But I also remember the outpouring of love and support from the Red Sox faithful the day after the World Series loss. Nearly one million people came out to a parade to honor the club. It was extraordinary and overwhelming, and I'll never forget it.

JBQ: How long did it take you to write "One Pitch From Glory"?

LG: It took me four years to write it. I wrote it out long hand, on 2900 pages of legal paper. I had a lot of help organizing it, and my wife did most of the proofreading. I turned in a 600 page manuscript, and my publisher thought I was turning in a book the size of "War and Peace". So we decided to divide the manuscript into two separate books.

JBQ: So there will be a second book?

LG: Yes. This book is about my life with the Red Sox and the inner workings of being a GM, and the years beyond that. The second book will be about my life in baseball before the Red Sox, when I was with the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets.

JBQ: Who was your favorite player growing up as a Red Sox fan?

LG: Without question it was Ted Williams. When I was 10 my father took me to my first game at Fenway Park. It was a dream to finally go there and see my hero. I was thrilled by the whole experience. After the game we stood outside the players' parking lot and watched all the Red Sox come out. I saw Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio. I was looking out for Ted, and finally a huge cry went up, "There's The Kid!!" The fans chanted for him, and then I finally saw him. He was tall, angular, and handsome. He signed a few autographs, then jumped into a taxi and was gone. I just stood there in awe, and it was one of the most memorable days of my life.

JBQ: You were also present at Fenway when he was honored at the 1999 All-Star Game. What do you remember about that night?

LG: It was an incredibly special night. The Red Sox arranged for a special flyover of the park by some Navy pilots. Ted was really touched by that. Afterwards the pilots, along with some Marines, were brought over by me to meet Ted. Ted talked to them about his military service, and he asked them about their experiences. He told them that he had many great honors in his life, like being a Hall of Fame baseball player, but he said his greatest honor was having been a Marine. They were all moved when he said that. I really believe that if Ted had not gone back to his baseball career after his tour in Korea, he would have continued his military service and made that his career.

JBQ: Do you still get asked about the Jeff Bagwell trade?

LG: All the time! I always tell people that we had a legitimate shot that summer to catch the Toronto Blue Jays and reach the World Series. I would have really regretted if I had not done everything I possibly could to get us there. That summer we had some serious bullpen problems. Jeff Reardon, our closer, had been hurt with back problems, and we couldn't bank on Jeff Gray, who was pressed into service and did a good job. But we needed more help out there. One of our best scouts, Eddie Kasko, highly recommended getting Larry Andersen from the Houston Astros. He had a terrific year as a setup man there.

Jeff Bagwell was not really considered a big prospect. He was more of a line drive hitter. He hit only four home runs at AA New Britain that year. He was not really a third baseman, and he had to move positions. Manager Butch Hobson loved the competitor in him. But we had Wade Boggs at third at the time, and big prospects like Mo Vaughn, Scott Cooper and Tim Naehring on the way. It was a real shame about Naehring. He was a tremendous talent. He was derailed by injuries, otherwise I thought he was going to be a big star for the Red Sox.

So I thought to myself, "I'll regret it if I don't make this trade." So we did it, and Andersen helped us big time in September, and we won the AL East on the last day. But unfortunately we couldn't get past Oakland in the ALCS and reach the World Series. We ended losing Andersen to free agency because of the collusion settlement, and he went to the San Diego Padres in 1991.

JBQ: What do you think of the fact that the Red Sox will be staying at Fenway Park?

LG: I think it's great. Fenway Park has such a unique charm that no other ballpark has. People come to Boston not just to see the team play, but to see the park. It is one of Boston's biggest tourist sites. I think the clubhouse improvements are great and the seats on top of the Green Monster are really special. I didn't think anyone could ever put seats up there. The new ownership has done some wonderful things to improve the experience of being at Fenway Park. They listen to fans, and realize that the park is an historical monument.

JBQ: Who have been your greatest influences in your baseball career?

LG: I started out in baseball with the Baltimore Orioles in the mid-60s and Harry Dalton was the GM then. He gave me my first job as director of minor league scouting and after three years I moved over to director of minor league operations. The Orioles had some terrific people over there then, like Earl Weaver and Lee McPhail. It was in Baltimore that I got my best baseball education.

JBQ: What do you do for the Red Sox today?

LG: I am an executive consultant and I do community relations work, such as meeting with groups for the club. I was Senior VP for a while. During the season I am at Fenway Park for just about every game. I'm very happy what I am doing for the team now.

JBQ: What is your proudest accomplishment in baseball?

LG: I am very proud of the 1986 Red Sox club, and also the fact that we won three division titles in five years. After winning the '86 pennant, attendance at Fenway climbed to new record highs, and we also developed many great young players, like Mike Greenwell, Ellis Burks, Jody Reed and Mo Vaughn.

But I will never forget the exhibition game we played against the Mets at Shea Stadium in 1987 for charity. Mets owner Fred Wilpon asked me to throw out the first ball before the game. He also had an announcement made over the PA system that I was the man who had helped build both teams that faced each other in 1986 World Series. That was really classy gesture on his part, and one I will never forget.
